Dice la leyenda urbana que Juan Gómez (Barcelona, 1969) era un profesor de bachillerato de lengua y literatura que decidió cambiar las aulas por los escenarios y adoptó el pseudónimo de El Sobrino del Diablo en 1999. Desde entonces ha realizado más de 1.500 conciertos por toda España, dedicándose especialmente a Barcelona y su área urbana, lugares en que tiene parroquia fiel en sus espectáculos mensuales en diversos locales: l’Astrolabi (Barcelona) o Faktoria d’Arts (Terrassa) sin olvidarnos del Gruta 77 (Madrid), La Vaquería (Tarragona) y el Juan Sebastián Bar (Zaragoza).
Su canción Encuentro con Dolores fue una de las revelaciones de la programación de Radio 3 en 2001. Poco antes, fue ganador de los concursos de música Horta-Guinardó (BCN) y El Sol (Zaragoza). Todo ello le llevó a grabar su primer disco, titulado En las nubes (K-Industria, 2002) y a formar banda (ESDD guitarra y voz, más Nando Caballero al bajo y Javi Rodríguez a la batería). En los últimos tres años ha sido un habitual de las fiestas de la Mercé, las de Gràcia y el festival de cantautores Barnasants y también ha salido de Catalunya para actuar en Los Conciertos de Radio 3, en el Festival Socarrat 2001, en las Jornadas Setenteras 2006 y en diversas salas de Manresa, Reus, Terrassa, Lleida, Hospitalet, Logroño, Caldes de Montbui, Bilbao, Monreal, Valencia, Zaragoza, Binéfar, Santiago, Segovia, Ponteareas, Olot, Amposta, Burgos, Fraga, Sabadell, Mallorca, Benicássim, Andorra, Girona, Tudela, Xirivella o Barbastro, entre muchos otros lugares de toda la península. Sus canciones se caracterizan por textos de carácter ácrata no exentos de humor, sobre melodías de ecléctica procedencia (blues, gospel, rock, reggae) y su puesta en escena, próxima a la performance teatral y a la stand up comedy, no deja a nadie indiferente. En 2003 edita su segundo disco, Hades Tiempo (K-Industria). Como escritor: ha publicado “Thin Lizzy, la leyenda del rock irlandés” e “Introducción a Frank Zappa”, con prólogo de El Gran Wyoming, ambos libros editados por Editorial Milenio en 2001 y 2004 respectivamente.
Entre octubre de 2004 y febrero de 2005 llevó a cabo una exitosa gira de 75 actuaciones en una decena de salas de Barcelona con la productora El Terrat en “Cómicos de Barra”, un show itinerante que aunaba música y teatro y que tuvo un fin de fiesta con cuatro funciones a rebosar de público en el barcelonés Teatre Capitol. Posteriormente ha colaborado en diversos programas de Andreu Buenafuente.
Desde septiembre de 2004 a agosto de 2005 mantuvo una sección semanal en el programa de RNE-Radio 4 “Dia a la Vista”. También ha trabajado a menudo en estudio y en directo con músicos como Sabino Méndez (ex Loquillo y Trogloditas) o Julián Hernández (Siniestro Total). En julio de 2005 aparece su tercer disco, Pulgatorio, el más rockero y provocador de los tres y el que tuvo mejores críticas entre la prensa de toda la península. Desde diciembre de 2005 y hasta julio de 2007 colabora con canciones y monólogos en el magazine “La Tarda”, dirigido por Elisenda Roca en Barcelona TV.
En verano del 2007 se edita El Cuarto de las Ratas, el cuarto disco, un trabajo más redondo y compacto que los tres anteriores, con letras ácidas e irónicas, como siempre. Todo el disco está dibujado por Carlos Gambarte (El Víbora, Makoki, El Jueves…), un rockero fan del grupo que supo plasmar con su arte el “espíritu” de las canciones.
Desde septiembre de 2008 y hasta la fecha presente el Sobrino colabora semanalmente (viernes y domingo) en dos programas musicales y culturales de la emisora Com Ràdio. L’Altra cara de la Lluna, con Nando Caballero y Exquisit, con Lluís Montserrat.
Enemigo público nº 2 (Chatunga Records), el quinto disco y primero en directo se graba en Badalona en noviembre de 2008 y se edita tres meses después. Es un trabajo de monólogos y canciones con el Sobrino armado únicamente con su acústica y la colaboración del público.
En noviembre de 2009 se publica Perder la Dignidad (La Produktiva Records), sexto disco oficial del Sobrino y quinto en estudio, en que además de su banda habitual más el teclista Angel Santiago (Whiskyns, Gallina) cuenta con invitados de lujos como Quimi Portet, Dani Flaco y Gerard Quintana.
En 2011 La Produktiva le edita Music is the best, su séptimo sexto disco oficial, un trabajo de adaptaciones al castellano de canciones de gente tan variopinta como Simon & Garfunkel, Judas Priest, Ron Sexsmith, The Kinks, Ben Harper, Loudon Wainwright III, Johnny Cash, Van Morrison, The Jayhawks, Tom Petty, Frank Zappa, Rory Gallagher y Bob Marley.
En directo actúa en acústico o acompañado de trío eléctrico, con Javi Rodríguez a la batería y coros y Juako Malavirgen al bajo y gags. También combina sus bolos con su faceta de vocalista en otros proyectos, como la formación de rock a capela El Inkreíble Kinteto Afonía o el grupo argentino de rock Náspid Franzapán.
